BACKDROPS BY KIRSTIN

I have a degree in Fine Art, but I never thought I’d pick up a paintbrush again. And I didn’t for 17 years. I was happy with that.

For over a decade, I’ve had a successful career as a newborn photographer. I never thought about painting again because photography became my creative outlet.

Then I decided I wanted a hand-painted photography backdrop for my studio, but everything I found online had a masculine, grungy aesthetic that felt more suited to headshot photography than the delicate world of motherhood photography.

So I picked up a paintbrush again to create my own.

I remembered why my degree was in Fine Art. Why I specialised in painting. The peace it brings to my mind is unlike anything else. Focusing solely on what I’m painting quiets all the anxiety of running a small business.

Now, I pick up my paintbrush every day (or, in this case, a paint roller) and create one-of-a-kind, hand-painted photography backdrops for photographers by combining my two favourite creative passions: painting and photography.

Every photography backdrop is an original painting on cotton duck canvas, not a photograph of a texture printed repeatedly onto fabric. Layers of hand-mixed colour help to create natural tonal movement that responds beautifully to studio and window light. As each piece is painted individually, the backdrop shown in the product photographs is the exact one you receive and one of its kind.

I am both a Fine Art graduate and a working newborn, maternity and family photographer. After more than 12 years as a working photographer, I understand that a backdrop must do more than look beautiful on its own. Instead it must flatter skin tones, retain detail in highlights and shadows, and support the subject without overpowering.

Delivery

Ready-to-ship canvas backdrops are carefully rolled around a protective core and boxed in Southampton, Hampshire. Delivery is available throughout the UK, and various international destinations shown at checkout. Each product page states the exact dimensions, material and availability of the individual backdrop.

QUESTIONS

Hand-painted photography backdrops are made from high-quality cotton duck canvas and acrylic paint. 

The backdrops are colour calibrated using Calibrite so that white balance and colours of the backdrop product photos are correct.

Due to the nature of the product, returns are not possible. However, if the backdrop arrives damaged please contact me at hello@littlecrumpetsphotography.com asap. 

ORDERING & SHIPPING

Hand-painted photography backdrops are shipped rolled on a tube and in a protective box. If you order two or more backdrops, they will be shipped together on one tube. 

Your hand-painted photography backdrop will be packaged and shipped in 3-7 business days. DHL will update you on their shipping times once shipped. Pickup from Southampton, Hampshire is an option if you wish to schedule a time to pick up your backdrop or reduce your shipping fees.

Yes, I currently ship to all of the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

CARING FOR YOUR BACKDROP

Hand-painted photography backdrops should be stored on the roll they came on so they don’t wrinkle. You can leave canvas hanging on your backdrop stand or attach directly to a wall (some photographers use magnets to do so). 

If your hand-painted photography backdrop develops wrinkles over time, simply iron the back of your backdrop on a low heat with no steam. 

It isn’t recommended to clean your hand-painted photography backdrop with water as the backdrops are painted with acrylic. 

There may be bits of small debris (threads from the canvas etc) painted onto your hand-painted photography backdrop. Do not remove these as this will also remove the paint. The threads will not show up in your images.
